The Guandu Committee and the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro held this week of water, from the 22nd to the 24th of March, the 1st Meeting of Research and Environmental Education of the Guandu Committee and the 1st Meeting of Researchers of Flona Mário Xavier. The objective was to encourage the performance of social actors in the Guandu River Basin territory to carry out research, teaching and extension actions, offering a space for socio-environmental learning, sharing experiences and integration. More than 1500 people signed up and were able to follow lectures by specialists, with experience and work throughout Brazil, who addressed topics related to the Guandu Watershed, Environmental Education and Biodiversity Conservation, as well as presentations of work by researchers from all over the world. This was the first event that are intended to be regular and even itinerant events, as coordinator Karine Bueno Vargas, professor at the Department of Geography (IA/UFFRJ) and at the Graduate Program in Geography/PPGGEO/UFRRJ explains: “the idea proposed for the Guandu Committee’s research and environmental education event is that it travels to the basin in its next editions, in case it is in person and if it needs to be maintained in a virtual way, organized by other institutions, as well as joining to other conservation units. We need to join forces in favor of a common good, which is the conservation of our basin. The event’s success is the result of a lot of effort by the organizing committee, made up of professors and students, plus the support of the Guandu Committee’s communication, which made a wide dissemination of the event in various digital media. The fact of being online provided the presence of participants from all over Brazil. The opportunity to send papers to the event encouraged many students from outside the state to participate”, she explained.
The opening of the event, on World Water Day (March 22) had a virtual table with the presence of the Magnificent Rector of UFRRJ Professor Ricardo Luis Louro Berbara; the Pro-Rector of Extension at UFRRJ Professor Roberto Lélis and the Director of the Guandu Committee Marcelo Danilo Bogalhão. Then began the first round table with the theme “Water Resources and Biodiversity in BH do Guandu” mediated by Janaina Vettorazzi, PhD in Animal Biology with expertise in themes involving water quality and water resources management, professor from Faeterj’s Environmental Management course, former member of the Guandu-RJ Committee. The panel speakers were Claudia Moster, Ph.D. in applied ecology and professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Forest Institute of UFRRJ; Cleber Castro, PhD in geography from UFRJ and adjunct professor in the department of geography and the Graduate Program in Geography at UFRRJ and; Décio Tubbs, Master in Geosciences (Geochemistry) and adjunct professor at UFRRJ and former general director of the Guandu-RJ Committee. ; &nb;&nb; ;
On Tuesday (23) the theme was Environmental Education, with the mediation of the director and member of the environmental education working group of the Guandu-RJ Committee, Marcelo Danilo Bogalhão. The specialists Silvana Gontijo, journalist, writer and media educator; Maria Henriqueta Andrade Raymundo, Master in Forest Resources and public manager in the area of sanitation and environmental education and; Agatha Tommasi, Coordinator of Sustainability and Environmental Education at the Secretary of State for Environment and Sustainability – SEAS, debated the challenges of environmental education in the 21st century.
On Wednesday (24), the last day of the event, the program was intended for Flona Mário Xávier and the 1st Meeting of Flona Mário Xavier Researchers, also ending the extension course “Dialogues between rights humanities and environmental education” coordinated by professor Karine Bueno Vargas and student Tamiris Souza, which was offered through the UFRRJ Extension School. Ricardo Luiz Nogueira de Souza, Master in Geography and head of the Conservation Unit; Joana Caram, Researcher at the Laboratory of Amphibians and Reptiles at UFRJ; and Gustavo Henrique Soares Guedes, Master in Animal Biology (UFRRJ) were the speakers, and Professor Karine Bueno Vargas, who is also former coordinator of the Environmental Education Working Group of the Guandu Committee and responsible for the Flona Mário Shared Guard Extension Program Xavier. At the end of the morning, the program also included a tribute to Eugênio Izecksohn, a researcher who died in 2013, considered one of the greatest Flona scholars Mário Xavier.
